MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system. It is characterised by inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath that covers nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. While there is no known cure for MS, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a holistic approach to managing the symptoms of MS and improving quality of life.
According to Ayurveda, MS is caused by an imbalance in the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – which leads to the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body. This can cause inflammation and damage to the nervous system. Therefore, the Ayurvedic approach to managing MS involves balancing the doshas and eliminating toxins from the body.

DIETARY CHANGES
One of the key components of Ayurvedic treatment for MS is dietary change. Ayurveda recommends a diet that is low in saturated fats and high in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. It is also important to avoid processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine. Ayurvedic practitioners may also recommend specific herbs and spices to incorporate into the diet, such as turmeric, ginger, and cumin, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Ayurveda emphasises the importance of lifestyle changes in managing MS. Practising stress-reducing techniques, such as yoga and meditation, can be particularly beneficial, as stress can exacerbate MS symptoms. Regular exercise is also important, as it can help improve balance, coordination, and muscle strength.

HERBAL REMEDIES
Ayurveda offers a range of herbal remedies that can be used to manage MS symptoms. Some of the most used herbs include:

  1. Ashwagandha is a powerful adaptogen that can help reduce stress and inflammation.
  2. Brahmi: an herb that can help improve cognitive function and memory.
  3. Turmeric is a spice that has potent anti-inflammatory properties.
  4. Guggulu is a resin that can help reduce inflammation and improve circulation.
  5. Shatavari: an herb that can help improve energy levels and promote overall well-being.
